52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks – At the Library

Libraries are a key component in researching family history. They offer many services that can help your genealogical journey.

Newspapers

Many libraries hold copies of local newspapers and local records.

Genealogy Books

If you are unsure where to start, or would like to find out how to search for particular records, the library is sure to have or get a “how to” book for you.

Online Genealogical Database

You can access all the major commercial databases at the library, for e.g. Ancestry, My Heritage and Find My Past.

Microfilm

Libraries still have access to microfiche readers, where you can access things like census records.

Other Records

Libraries hold other collections not available online. The library will normally have an online catalogue listing the collections they hold. When you find the collection you want to look at, make a note of the catalogue number, you may need to pre-order viewing the collection, check with the library.

Many libraries have family history guides, detailing how to get started, and links or suggestions to additional resources.

Check out what collections your local library holds, you might find a collection you wouldn’t necessarily have thought to look in.
